Hell and accountability

A warning out of mercy: the Quran describes the Fire so that we flee from what leads to it. Verses on the punishment of the wrongdoers and the regret of the deniers.

Al-Baqarah 2:24

فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُوا۟ وَلَن تَفْعَلُوا۟ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ ۖ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ۝٢٤

But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

An-Nisa 4:56

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا سَوْفَ نُصْلِيهِمْ نَارًا كُلَّمَا نَضِجَتْ جُلُودُهُم بَدَّلْنَـٰهُمْ جُلُودًا غَيْرَهَا لِيَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا ۝٥٦

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.

Ibrahim 14:16-17

مِّن وَرَآئِهِۦ جَهَنَّمُ وَيُسْقَىٰ مِن مَّآءٍ صَدِيدٍ ۝١٦

Before him is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water.

يَتَجَرَّعُهُۥ وَلَا يَكَادُ يُسِيغُهُۥ وَيَأْتِيهِ ٱلْمَوْتُ مِن كُلِّ مَكَانٍ وَمَا هُوَ بِمَيِّتٍ ۖ وَمِن وَرَآئِهِۦ عَذَابٌ غَلِيظٌ ۝١٧

He will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.

Al-Hajj 22:19-22

۞ هَـٰذَانِ خَصْمَانِ ٱخْتَصَمُوا۟ فِى رَبِّهِمْ ۖ فَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قُطِّعَتْ لَهُمْ ثِيَابٌ مِّن نَّارٍ يُصَبُّ مِن فَوْقِ رُءُوسِهِمُ ٱلْحَمِيمُ ۝١٩

These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water

يُصْهَرُ بِهِۦ مَا فِى بُطُونِهِمْ وَٱلْجُلُودُ ۝٢٠

By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins.

وَلَهُم مَّقَـٰمِعُ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ ۝٢١

And for [striking] them are maces of iron.

كُلَّمَآ أَرَادُوٓا۟ أَن يَخْرُجُوا۟ مِنْهَا مِنْ غَمٍّ أُعِيدُوا۟ فِيهَا وَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابَ ٱلْحَرِيقِ ۝٢٢

Every time they want to get out of it [i.e., Hellfire] from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"

Al-Furqan 25:11-14

بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِمَن كَذَّبَ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ سَعِيرًا ۝١١

But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze.

إِذَا رَأَتْهُم مِّن مَّكَانٍۭ بَعِيدٍ سَمِعُوا۟ لَهَا تَغَيُّظًا وَزَفِيرًا ۝١٢

When it [i.e., the Hellfire] sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring.

وَإِذَآ أُلْقُوا۟ مِنْهَا مَكَانًا ضَيِّقًا مُّقَرَّنِينَ دَعَوْا۟ هُنَالِكَ ثُبُورًا ۝١٣

And when they are thrown into a narrow place therein bound in chains, they will cry out thereupon for destruction.

لَّا تَدْعُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ ثُبُورًا وَٰحِدًا وَٱدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًا كَثِيرًا ۝١٤

[They will be told], "Do not cry this Day for one destruction but cry for much destruction."

Az-Zumar 39:71-72

وَسِيقَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ زُمَرًا ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءُوهَا فُتِحَتْ أَبْوَٰبُهَا وَقَالَ لَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَآ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِّنكُمْ يَتْلُونَ عَلَيْكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّكُمْ وَيُنذِرُونَكُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَـٰذَا ۚ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَلَـٰكِنْ حَقَّتْ كَلِمَةُ ٱلْعَذَابِ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ۝٧١

And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers will say, "Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "Yes, but the word [i.e., decree] of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers."

قِيلَ ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟ أَبْوَٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ ۝٧٢

[To them] it will be said, "Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."

Ghafir 40:71-72

إِذِ ٱلْأَغْلَـٰلُ فِىٓ أَعْنَـٰقِهِمْ وَٱلسَّلَـٰسِلُ يُسْحَبُونَ ۝٧١

When the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged

فِى ٱلْحَمِيمِ ثُمَّ فِى ٱلنَّارِ يُسْجَرُونَ ۝٧٢

In boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].

Ad-Dukhan 44:43-50

إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ۝٤٣

Indeed, the tree of zaqqūm

طَعَامُ ٱلْأَثِيمِ ۝٤٤

Is food for the sinful.

كَٱلْمُهْلِ يَغْلِى فِى ٱلْبُطُونِ ۝٤٥

Like murky oil, it boils within bellies

كَغَلْىِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ۝٤٦

Like the boiling of scalding water.

خُذُوهُ فَٱعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ۝٤٧

[It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,

ثُمَّ صُبُّوا۟ فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِۦ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ۝٤٨

Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."

ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْكَرِيمُ ۝٤٩

[It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَمْتَرُونَ ۝٥٠

Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."

Al-Waqi'ah 56:41-56

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۝٤١

And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?

فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ ۝٤٢

[They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water

وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ ۝٤٣

And a shade of black smoke,

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ ۝٤٤

Neither cool nor beneficial.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ۝٤٥

Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۝٤٦

And they used to persist in the great violation,

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ۝٤٧

And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ۝٤٨

And our forefathers [as well]?"

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ۝٤٩

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, the former and later peoples

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ ۝٥٠

Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٥١

Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ ۝٥٢

Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ ۝٥٣

And filling with it your bellies

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ۝٥٤

And drinking on top of it from scalding water.

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ ۝٥٥

And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ ۝٥٦

That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.

Al-Mulk 67:6-11

وَلِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ ۝٦

And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination.

إِذَآ أُلْقُوا۟ فِيهَا سَمِعُوا۟ لَهَا شَهِيقًا وَهِىَ تَفُورُ ۝٧

When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.

تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ ٱلْغَيْظِ ۖ كُلَّمَآ أُلْقِىَ فِيهَا فَوْجٌ سَأَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَآ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذِيرٌ ۝٨

It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?"

قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ قَدْ جَآءَنَا نَذِيرٌ فَكَذَّبْنَا وَقُلْنَا مَا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ مِن شَىْءٍ إِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ كَبِيرٍ ۝٩

They will say, "Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allāh has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِىٓ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ ۝١٠

And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."

فَٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًا لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ ۝١١

And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation for the companions of the Blaze.

Al-Muddaththir 74:26-31

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ ۝٢٦

I will drive him into Saqar.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ۝٢٧

And what can make you know what is Saqar?

لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ ۝٢٨

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ ۝٢٩

Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ ۝٣٠

Over it are nineteen [angels].

وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ ۝٣١

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.

An-Naba 78:21-30

إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا ۝٢١

Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًا ۝٢٢

For the transgressors, a place of return,

لَّـٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًا ۝٢٣

In which they will remain for ages [unending].

لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا ۝٢٤

They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.

إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا ۝٢٥

Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -

جَزَآءً وِفَاقًا ۝٢٦

An appropriate recompense.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا ۝٢٧

Indeed, they were not expecting an account

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا ۝٢٨

And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.

وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًا ۝٢٩

But all things We have enumerated in writing.

فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا ۝٣٠

"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."

Al-Humazah 104:4-9

كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِى ٱلْحُطَمَةِ ۝٤

No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحُطَمَةُ ۝٥

And what can make you know what is the Crusher?

نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُوقَدَةُ ۝٦

It is the fire of Allāh, [eternally] fueled,

ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةِ ۝٧

Which mounts directed at the hearts.

إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ ۝٨

Indeed, it [i.e., Hellfire] will be closed down upon them

فِى عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍۭ ۝٩
